  • Is Who?NYC-based composer and improvising bass guitarist Snellbinder=Jochem van Dijk; Born Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, in 1965; got his start in music by playing a homemade tea-chest bass with the highschool Dixieland band. When the paper route brought the 1st bass guitar, his band mates and him studied the first 16 bars of Take Five diligently for 2 months; the Bb and Db from the 3-note 5/4 figure was fingered on the the A-string, and for the time being the d-string tuned Eb, and off to the races it was. Numerous bands in his home country followed, with both covers and self penned songs. Playing bass with a circus band for 5 years in the summers led to a master’s thesis on Circus Music, sealing his graduation as an Ethnomusicologist in 1994. Worked as a music teacher for sevaral years, and wrote music for a number of theatre plays in for an Amsterdam-based theatre company. Has performed in Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and USA. Jochem van Dijk currently lives in New York. Stateside highlights include his arrangement of Strange Fruit performed by the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 2005, and the performance in 2009 of his pocket cantata Stuyvesant Reluctant at the Dia:Beacon.…

How to record a bass guitar – or 4 new solos, vibed differently

    Snelbinder’s Bass Space/Space Bass

I have started a new project where I record solo improvisations at home, -early in the morning that is-, before i go off to work. They are tentatively called “Mood of the Day” (all of them, so far- so much for being imaginative). The idea is to just play something and let things go where…
